Creating a safe place for students to comment on content is important for discussion. Some teachers choose to create a blog to interact with their students. Weebly allows anyone to comment on the blog.
Nabble - Embedded Forums
A well designed discussion forum can be a powerful tool for creating a sense of presence in your online course. The discussion forum is where students can express their thoughts, feelings, ideas, and emotions and engage in interactions with fellow students and the instructor. A discussion forum can be used to activate background knowledge at the start of learning, to express multiple perspectives during a unit, to check for understanding after covering material, or a myriad of other ways at any stage of learning. A discussion forum can provide the personal connections a student needs to feel connected and part of a learning community. Through the use of a discussion forum, you can achieve 100% participation in the discussion of a topic that is not practical in a face-to-face class. While Weebly no longer offers a discussion forum as a standard drag and drop option any longer, there are outside apps that can be easily embedded into a standard Weebly webpage to facilitate your discussion forum. We recommend using Nabble.com which is free and simple to use.
To get started, simply go to www.nabble.com and register for a free account. Once you have verified your email address, your forum is ready to create discussions and ready to embed in your Weebly. It does not matter which you chose to do first, it will work either way. To start a new discussion thread, select “new topic” above the topic line, name your discussion post, enter your prompt in the pop-up box, then select “post message” at the bottom. To embed your discussion forum in your Weebly, access the embed code under the “options” tab located above the topics line. Copy the embed code and go to your Weebly page. Under the “Pages” tab in Weebly, select the + sign and select “Standard Page”. Name the page Discussion Forum and hit “Done”. Change from “Pages” view to “Build” view. Drag and drop the “Embed Code” element to the new web page. Click to set custom HTML, then Edit Custom HTML. Paste the embed code in the pop-up box. To verify the forum embedded, hit “Publish” in the upper right-hand corner and check your website view of that page.
